The Antarctic ice cap is the single largest body of ice (and freshwater) in the world. Winds blow loose snow across the featureless plateau, or compact it into knife-edge sastrugi. This is also the site of human drama as Scott and Amundsen raced for the Geographic South Pole, a concept rather than a landmark. Adventurers from many nations now follow in their footsteps, and scientists at research stations located on the plateau undertake research extending from astrophysics, to drilling 400,000 year old ice cores. Hedgehog House photographers have visited here too.
