Humans have engaged in whaling since prehistoric times. Initially hunted from open boats with hand thrown weapons, the Norwegian invention of a highly efficient harpoon gun was too successful, reducing whale populations in many aeas to the point where large-scale commercial whaling became unsustainable. Now whale hunting is the focus of international environmental and ethical debate, focusing on issues of sustainability and conservation as well as ownership and national sovereignty. Since 1986 the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has declared a moratorium on commercial whaling. Hedgehog House has images of this activity.
