| In October it was time
to head north again with Betty and 4 other friends to
explore the Kangchenjunga area of Nepal. A major objective of the trip was to go up
the Tamur River to Walangchungola and Yangma, Tibetan refugee villages that have been
closed to visitors since 1955. Exploring the routes through to the Tibetan border
added the romantic element we enjoy on our journeys! After crossing two stunning
5000m passes in the Sharpo range, we dropped down to Ghunza and the standard route
to Kangchenjunga North base camp. The threat of Maoist activity in Nepal had significantly
reduced the number of trekkers in the area and we often had camp sites to ourselves,
the better to absorb the magnificence of the landscape. Colin and Babhendra ascended an
easy 6200m peak above Pangpema to find the vantage points from where Vittorio Sella
photographed Kangchenjunga when he travelled there with Freshfield in the 1899.
