Colin's passion for Antarctica took him back to the Ice during the southern summer
to work as a lecturer and zodiac driver for Greg Mortimer's Aurora Expeditions.
The added enticement was the prospect of repeating Shackleton's route across South
Georgia. Despite difficult conditions and very strong winds, he and Greg successfully
guided 6 clients from King Haakon Bay on the west coast of the island across the mountains
to the old whaling station, Stromness. Even with the best modern equipment available, the
party struggled with the conditions and the terrain. They returned with even greater
admiration for Sir Ernest Shackleton's leadership during the desperate first crossing of
the mountainous island.
